The Zavitan stream, located in the Golan Heights, flows all year round and is 15 kilometers long. The river is fed from small streams which flow into its riverbed at its highest point. Along the river, there are small waterfalls and pools. From a pool with large hexagonal stone formations at the head of the Zavitan falls, the river descends from a height of about 25 meters to an additional pool. The river ultimately flows into the Meshushim River. The polygons characteristic of the river landscape were created when the surface of lava which had flowed down after a volcanic eruption, cooled and shrank. The differences in temperature between the external and the internal lava caused cracks in the external covering. In time, the development of these cracks created perfect polygons which can be seen along the river ravine. The height of the pillars reaches about five meters, while most have five, six or sometimes even seven sides. The diameter of each pillar ranges between 30 and 40 centimeters. The recommended hiking path at the river is a circular trail of five kilometers at the bottom of the river, which begins and ends at the parking lot of the Yehudia River. We walk down the path marked in green in a westward direction towards the river. At the meeting of the green path and the red path, we go north along the edge of the cliff until the red and the black paths meet. We go down to the river and enjoy the pools and the variegated river vegetation. We continue on until Ein Nataf, a unique brook in which the water flows along a low ridge to create a gentle waterfall. We return following the red path until its meeting with the green path which takes us back to the parking lot. Alongside this path, there are other possible trails, so that, for example, the visitor can continue from Ein Nataf along the red path in the direction of Brechat Hameshushim (The Hexagonal Pool) or go from the Yehudia parking area along the upper part of the river to a trail winding around pools, low falls and river vegetation.
