Just east of Capernaum, on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, is one of the most beautiful churches in Israel, the Church of the Twelve Apostles. This Greek Orthodox Church was built in the 1920s to honor the twelve apostles of Jesus. Inside, the iconostasis, the wall that hides the altar from the public, depicts images of Mary and Jesus the infant, as well as those of other saints of the Christian world.
In the church there are murals with motifs evoking various events described in the New Testament, among them the Last Judgment, the day when the Lord will judge all nations. In the pictorial representation on the mural, the first to be judged are Adam and Eve. Images on the right side of the mural symbolize good, while those on the left, which include Satan and Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus, all symbolize evil. One could spend hours observing the church’s magnificent painted ceilings.
