The Biblical Zoo is the most popular tourist attraction in Israel. It is located in the south of Jerusalem and is surrounded by spectacular views of the Jerusalem hills. the zoo is situated on 62 acres of land with a lake at its center, and includes an island of monkeys and a variety of animals in various settings without barred cages.
The zoo was established in 1940 but, in 1993, moved to its present location where most of the animals could be displayed in their natural settings.
In order to provide conditions similar to those in nature, the animals are not caged and deep moats separate them from the public and prevent direct contact with visitors. The zoo is separated into a number of areas in which animals are divided according to certain categories (for example, the continent from which they have come).
The zoological collection includes a range of Israeli animals which are mentioned in the Bible as well as rare animals which are in danger of extinction. There are animals from a wide variety of geographical settings, ranging from desert to rainforest animals. The zoo's animal life can also be found in the pavilions which line the paths and in a giant bird sanctuary. The red panda should not be missed, nor should the tiger display, the penguins and the display of animals living on and under the ground.
Because the zoo is so large, we recommended that visitors start their visit by taking the zoo train in one direction and then continuing on foot
