Mount Hermon is the highest mountain in Israel and is located on the northeastern border with Syria and Lebanon. When visibility is good, its peak may be seen for 150 kilometers.
The Hermon is divided between Syria, Lebanon and Israel and its peak of 2814 meters marks the border between the three countries. It highest point in Israeli territory is 2236 meters above sea level.
The Hermon range was created in the fold which occurred when the Arabian plate moved northward  with respect to the Israeli sub-plate and the Sinai Peninsula, along the Syro-African Rift which cuts eastern Israel from the north to the south.
The Israeli section of the Hermon which constitutes seven percent of the entire area of the Hermon range was captured from Syria at the end of the Six Day War as a reaction to Syrian aggression against Israel which had characterized Syrian rule of the Golan Heights from the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 until 1967. In order to provide a basis for security and quiet on the eastern border with Syria, a military post was established on the peak of the Israeli Hermon which was meant to give early warning and information about movements of the Syrian army as well as safeguarding the country against terrorist organizations in Lebanon that might be a threat to Israel.
Along with the great military presence in the Hermon area, most of the area of the Israeli Hermon has been recognized as a nature reserve, characterized by its flora and fauna unique to high mountains, its rivers, its karstic topography, as well as a number of historical and archaeological sites. There are some hiking paths marked in the region but most of these are closed to visitors at present without advance coordination with the army due to their proximity to the Lebanese border.
In addition to the nature reserve on the Hermon, a 1,200 acre tourist site is located in an area 1600-2040 meters above sea level. The Hermon site serves as a vacation area throughout the year. During the winter months the snowy slopes become a skiing and snowboarding site and many visitors come to the mountain to ride up the cable car to the snow covered peak and to have fun in the snow and to slide down the slopes in sleds.
During the summer months, when it is extremely hot in most areas of Israel, the Hermon site has wonderful weather. In this period, the visitor may take the cable car to the peak and enjoy the spectacular view of the Galilee, the Hula Valley, the Golan, Lebanon and Syria. Daily tours take place at the peak of the Hermon and include impressive lookout points, the story of the capture of the Hermon and its strategic importance for the State of Israel, and making an acquaintance with the rare flora and fauna which have the special characteristics of a mountain climate
