One of the most beautiful streams in Israel: Mediterranean woodland, clear pools and a Crusader fortress
From an impressive observation point looking out on Nahal Kziv and the Montfort Crusader fortress, we begin walking along a circular trail, six kilometers in length. Just after the observation point, the path, marked in red, descends to the ravine of Nahal Kziv stream. Upon reaching the stream, we can see the remains of a Crusader farm. The path then rises for about a quarter of an hour to the Montfort Crusader fortress. The fortress and the spectacular view are particularly impressive. The farm and fortress were established in the mid-twelfth century, during the days of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem by a family of French nobles who ruled the area. During the thirteenth century, the fortress was sold to the Teutonic Knights who had arrived from Acre following a dispute with the Hospitaler and the Templar Knights. Today the visitor can still see the vaulted tower and the inner stronghold which was built by the Teutonic knights.
After the visit to the fortress, we descend the verdant path and walk along the bed of the stream in a Mediterranean wood with characteristic river vegetation, such as wild raspberry, oleander and ferns. We pass a number of clear pools in which we can cool down. We then cross a path marked in black which reascends, but we continue along a path marked in green until we reach Ein Tamir, the site of a tunnel from which water flows into a refreshing pool. Visitors can enter the tunnel with a flashlight to reach the source of the stream.
Here we ascend a path marked in blue to the top of the hill and we pass an enclosure of Persian fallow deer. The deer were imported to Nahal Kziv as part of a special project by the Nature Reserves Authority to return the population of fallow deer to the stream area. (Fallow deer had become extinct in Israel at the end of the nineteenth century.) From there, we continue to climb until we reach the Olive Parking Area and we continue for about three kilometers to the Park Goren Parking Area from where we started.
